Which services can track a mobile phone?

Locating technology when it comes to mobile phones has a lot to do with the fact that they communicate with base stations all the time, more precisely with the ones closest to their location. Once you know with which tower a cell phone communicates, you know the general area where it's located. There are four different types of systems which provide localization of mobile phones. They are the handset based, the network based, the SIM based and the hybrid systems.

The ones that are network based will use the infrastructure of the carrier to find out where a mobile phone is located. Locating a mobile phone with this method doesn't require access to the phone in question, so it's the easiest one to use for the mobile operator. There are a number of techniques used here, but none of them is extremely precise. Cell identification is one of them and another one is triangulation, which is useful when the cell phone communicates with at least two or three wireless towers at the same time. The best accuracy for this type of tracking is obtained in urban settings, where there are more wireless towers.

The second type of localization is the one that is handset based, where special software is installed on a mobile phone, in order to transmit the location of the device. The ideal situation here is when the phone has a GPS chip, but it's not a must. You need a smartphone for this type of localization to work, so phones with iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Symbian or Windows Mobile are the obvious targets here.

Another type of localization is SIM based, in UMTS or GSM handsets. The measurements from the handset are used to determine the signal strength, round trip time and the ID of the serving cell, which would allow the position to be calculated.
